Planning ahead for college can't begin too soon. Each year, more and more students are applying to college making the admission criteria more competitive.
By planning ahead, you will be able to map out your future and pave the way for your success.
WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING AS A FRESHMAN?
Get to know your guidance counselor and develop an overview of your high school education. Have an idea of the courses you may be interested in taking and determine if there are any prerequisites (requirements) for those courses. For example, signing up for Photography B may require successful completion of Photography A.
Begin thinking about the type of college or university you may want to attend. Big school? Small school? Local? As far away as possible? State university? Private college? By having an idea of where you MAY want to go, you can get an idea of the admission requirements.
Attempt as many academically challenging courses as possible. If you found US History easy your first semester, ask about US History Honors for the second semester. Challenge yourself the next year by taking Honors NSL Government.
SHOULD I GET INVOLVED IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES?
YES!!! A school as large as Montgomery Blair can be a very lonely place if you don't find a group of friends to hang around with. Joining sports teams and clubs introduces you to new people and new experiences.
Colleges like to see consistency and longevity in clubs and activities. If you plan on playing football, make sure you are eligible to try out all four years. Stick with clubs, however, if you hate it….look for another to join.
By joining clubs and participating in other activities, you'll become a more well-rounded individual. Besides, it's fun.
